The Boulder Valley School District is planning a radical, contradictory overhaul that threatens to dismantle Douglass Elementary, a high-performing, National Blue Ribbon school ranking in the top 8% of Colorado public schools.
Under the guise of tackling declining “neighborhood” numbers, BVSD intends to dissolve our attendance boundaries, displace our student body across three separate destination schools, and uproot our vital ICAN Special Education program.
But our building isn’t closing. The district plans to hand our campus over to High Peaks Elementary, a focus commuter program with exactly 0% neighborhood boundary enrollment.
The Core Contradiction
BVSD claims Douglass is unsustainable because of boundary metrics, deliberately erasing the hundreds of open-enrollment families from Lafayette, Louisville, and Erie who choose Douglass and bring vital state funding to this building. Yet, the district is hand-delivering our facility to a selective focus school that relies 100% on the exact same choice-enrollment lottery system.
This isn’t a fiscal optimization plan; it’s public school gentrification. It breaks apart a thriving, inclusive neighborhood community to accommodate an exclusive, regional lottery program that strips away yellow bus transportation and leaves working families stranded.
The BVSD Board votes on September 22. We have less than a month to protect our kids, protect our community, and demand equity from our district.
